If you’ve been freelancing for a while, there’s a good chance you can do a lot of things.

You’ve probably built up years of experience, worked with all kinds of clients, picked up new skills along the way and become very good at adapting to whatever is in front of you.

That breadth is genuinely useful. But when you’re trying to build a business, it can also leave you with too many possible directions.

You might find yourself trying to talk about several audiences at once, listing everything you can offer, or changing your message depending on who you happen to be speaking to. And although all of it may be true, it can make your business harder for someone on the outside to grasp.

That’s where a clear niche becomes useful.

It gives you a stronger sense of what you want to lead with, where you want to build deeper expertise, and which kinds of clients and opportunities you want more of.

You can still take on other work. The difference is that you’re making a deliberate choice about the direction you want your business to grow in, rather than letting the next enquiry decide it for you.

And if you’ve been thinking about your niche on and off for months, this is a chance to give the question your full attention and make some real progress with it.

What we’ll work on

During the workshop, we’ll look at the experience and skills you already have, the kind of work you’d like to do more of, and where there may be a stronger focus for your business.

We’ll work through:

• what you most want to be associated with professionally
• who is most likely to need and value that work
• what those clients are really trying to solve, improve or achieve
• which parts of your background, experience and approach strengthen your position
• how to describe what you do in a way that feels clear and natural

There’ll also be a short breakout exercise where you can explain your work to another person and hear what they understood, what caught their attention, and where they wanted more clarity.

That tends to be extremely useful. When you’ve been inside your own business for years, it’s surprisingly difficult to hear your own description as a potential client would.

You’ll get to test how you currently explain your work and hear, in real time, what another person understands and where they get lost.

Saying it out loud gives you a much better sense of what is actually coming across — and gives you something concrete you can start refining straight away.

You may already have a niche but feel it needs refining.

You’ll also have stronger language for explaining your work and a workbook you can continue using afterwards as you refine your positioning.

The aim is to leave with enough clarity to make the next decisions in your business more easily, whether that’s updating your website, developing an offer, choosing what to talk about in your marketing, or simply being able to explain what you do without giving someone your entire professional history.
