Problem: Genny was making a decent living from freelance ELT writing, but her work-life balance was non-existent, and she was starting to think, ‘Is this it?’
Result: She was inspired to set up her own business, helping people in the tourism industry with their copy. The programme gave her everything she’d hoped for- and more besides.
People have been asking me recently about working with Rachael because they know I’ve done the course and my answer is always the same. I say you should definitely go with this programme. It’s an amazing programme.
Rachael is such a great coach. It’s a fantastic investment and certainly changed my life, both professionally and personally, and I’m pretty sure it could do the same for you too.
Before joining Designed to Flourish
I’d made a really quite a decent living through my freelance ELT writing, but my work life balance, as they say, it was just terrible, completely non existent. Increasingly, I felt that the work that I was doing wasn’t really challenging me and I wasn’t really utilizing my strengths, and I was starting to feel quite depressed looking ahead to the future, thinking this is going to be the rest of my life for the next 20 years.
And I think something in Rachael’s posts just spoke to me and I felt like I wanted to take charge of my own destiny.
What has changed since you did the programme?
Since doing Rachael’s course, so much has changed in my life. Not just professionally, but also personally. I was inspired to set up my own business, which began with writing a business plan and I managed to get funding, which was amazing. I think in terms of self belief, it’s really helped with that. I always thought that wasn’t really an issue for me, but it turned out maybe that I did need a bit of a push to really follow my dreams. So really putting my money on the table and having that belief that, yeah, I could do this and it was worth investing in myself and taking myself a little bit more seriously.
You know, for years, I’d just been a freelance writer. Whenever anyone asked me what I did, I was just a bit like, well, well, you know, a writer, but nothing exciting, like just, just some, just some, just some educational stuff, you know, whereas now I feel much more positive about it. I can say, well, I have my own business, you know, it’s a complete mind shift in the way I see myself, that’s had a knock on effect, I think, on my personal life.
I feel much more enthused about waking up in the morning. I feel excited about my work rather than thinking, I’ve got to get through this work today. It’s like, yes, what am I going to do today?
What were your key learnings from the programme?
The whole social media thing, which for me was something I’ve always dreaded, but I learned how to shift my mindset about that, and as well as all the technical know how about the different platforms, which was a big help, social media and branding, a lot of the ins and outs of running a business, which was really, really useful.
A couple of things that I hadn’t really expected to learn, which were very, very important for me. We began really by looking at our vision and talking about niche, and that was something I’d never thought about before. And I think I had some kind of woolly idea about being a copywriter for everybody who wanted anything written ever and we spent quite a lot of time talking about niche, and that helped me a lot.
In fact, I definitely wouldn’t be doing what I’m doing now if it hadn’t been for these discussions with Rachael and the rest of the group. and the other thing I think that was significant for me because I hadn’t been expecting it was the stuff about mindset and imposter syndrome. Now I really went on to that course thinking, Oh, I’m interested in the practical stuff, but I’m really not interested in all this woo, new age, hippie stuff about mindset.
I’ll just like listen politely, but you know, I’m not going to bother with that. And actually, um, yeah, I have to eat my words and say that I did learn stuff about myself. Now I realize when I’m procrastinating, for example, or when I suddenly start to do something that is away from my focus, I realized actually that why I’m doing that is because I’m scared.
And that’s something I don’t think I would have realized before doing this programme and it’s really helpful for me to realize that so I can then address these unhelpful behaviors and turn them around.
Is it worth the investment?
The course is full of very useful information, you could think, oh, I could look stuff like this up online and find the answers myself.
But the fact is you wouldn’t because it would take too long and it’s so good to have it like a pathway that you can follow like an organized route map. The programme is really, really well organized, really well structured. And it’s designed in a way that you really can track your progress.
It’s a fantastic investment and certainly changed my life, both professionally and personally, and I’m pretty sure it could do the same for you too.
What are you looking forward to next?
