The idea of a membership is often very attractive because you only have to do the maths and you see that if you can get, say, 100 members even at a low rate of £10 a month, that's £1000 recurring revenue. 

However, if you got a low score, there are probably two key reasons. Firstly, you may well not yet have the audience in place to be able to bring in enough people consistently to make a membership work. It may be necessary to first work on growing your audience both on social media, and through creating an active email list.

There are absolutely strategies you can put in place to launch successfully, and get people inside, and to retain them as members once they are there. However, you do need to learn and implement these strategies, and even then, you will inevitably get some 'churn', meaning that you need to keep bringing new people into your world, and into the membership. 

Secondly, it may be that you haven't quite realised the impact of a membership in terms of how you run your business. Memberships are about as far from passive income as you can get.. they produce recurring income, but you have to work pretty hard for it. You also need to be consistently available, making it hard to take time off (though there are ways around this), and they also tend to be slow to grow, meaning that they won't bring in much money to start with- not ideal if you need to get your income level up fast. 

Having said all this, don't despair. There are ways to make a membership work for, especially if you start it slowly as part of a bigger offer, perhaps including a 1-2-1 hybrid offer or offering it to alumni of your group programme.

However, there are ways around these challenges, especially if you can get some help with supporting the members and combine your membership with another offer such as a 1-2-1 hybrid offer or a group programme. In this way, it can be allowed to grow more slowly, while you're still earning elsewhere. 

Most likely your biggest challenge though is the size of your audience. You need to be able to bring in enough people consistently to make a membership work, which means you not only need a decent sized audience, but you also need mechanisms for consistent growth.

It sounds as if this could be a great business model for you. You almost certainly already have a clear niche, and a big enough and warm enough audience to launch a membership. 

Of course, you need to have a reason for people to join your membership; an outcome that they will achieve through a membership better than through working with you 1-2-1 or in a group programme. Usually this is about ongoing support, community and accountability. 

If this sounds like something your clients would need and value, you could be onto a winner. 

Done right, this model can give your clients a better experience, with the opportunity to learn from their peers, and get more practice in, while reducing your workload and increasing your revenue. 

However, a membership can be a tricky beast in terms of slowing the 'churn', as members leave, and new ones need to be brought in, and keeping members engaged, feeling that they're getting good value, while not feeling overwhelmed, and that they're 'not making the most' of the membership.
